BlackBerry has partnered with the leading anti malware solution provider Trend Micro to protect its users from malware and boost in-app security.
RIM has slashed the prices of the Blackberry Playbook in a rather very playful manner. If you are based in Philippines, you have all the more reasons to be joyful.
While Playbook 16GB is available for Philippine peso 10,990 from the actual cost of Philippine peso 23,990. Playbook 32GB is now sold at Philippine peso 13,990 instead of Philippine peso 28,990. Playbook 64GB is priced at Philippine peso 15,990 from the actual Philippine peso 33,990.
While this can be seen as an overly aggressive move by RIM to take on some of the market of iPad, only time will tell how successful this idea of RIM will be.

The Mobile Asia Expo is scheduled to be held in Shanghai this year from 20-22 June at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre in Shanghai, China.

One of the most popular mobile phone browsers, Opera Mini has launched a brand new version – the Opera Mini 7 for your Blackberry. Apart from the direct access to social media, the browser offers superior compression (especially good for those with limited data plans).
The blog adds that the new browser makes the feature phones “act smart”. Yes, with the Smart page feature that gives quick and easy access to the visited sites and popular contents.
New features in Opera Mini 7 include the following:
- Smart page with overview of your favorite sites, latest updates from social networks (Twitter and Facebook), news gathered from your favorite sites (via their RSS feeds) and suggested links.
- Unlimited speed dials
- Right-to-left support in UI.
- Tab improvements.
- No more “www.” in address bar.

RIM has officially released OS 2.1 beta for the Blackberry PlayBook. With the official release, the changes that the new PlayBook has in store for us have been unveiled. Here is a list where we mention the few listed by RIM:
- Each Android app will now run in its own window. This greatly improves the user experience and consistency among the other application runtimes.
- Access to the Camera hardware is now supported for Android apps, allowing many more application types to work on the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet.
- In-App Payment is now supported through the BlackBerry Payment SDK, so Android applications can include virtual items for sale in their applications
- Portrait support for Email, Calendar and Contacts
- Improved folder support including IMAP folder support
- Improved HTML5 support, currently places PlayBook OS 2.1 in 1st place
This has raised further excitement in the masses to the rest of the OS 2.1 features. We will have to wait until it come full steam with the new OS released commercially!!
The 2.1 Android SDK will be released in beta coinciding with the OS release, and the 2.1 Native SDK will be posted next week, with an update to the Adobe® AIR® SDK to come shortly after. The OS 2.1 beta can be downloaded from various sites. The only necessary condition being: “to whitelist your Playbook’s PIN”, just like PlayBook OS 2.0 beta.
In an urge to motivate the developers, RIM has announced setting up the first ever Innovation Zone in the Asia-Pacific region. The report suggests that the Blackberry Innovation Zone will be set up in Kerala. Blackberry’s latest technologies and developer’s activities like: Blackberry Hackathons and Bar Camps will be showcased in this Innovative zone.
Alec Saunders, Vice President of Developer Relations and Ecosystem Development at RIM announced two more Innovative zones in India. These innovative zones are being set up to focus on making RIM’s mobile technology more accessible and training young minds with the help of Blackberry experts. The Innovative zones are equipped with 4G network, telecom labs, legal and intellectual property services, fully furnished offices and video conference rooms.
With the grey matter being utilized, we expect lots of Innovation at these innovation zones…!!
RIM’s R&D center is busy developing a technology for the new mobile device unlock alternative on the BB10 platform. It seems like the codes and patterns are passes and so RIM has devised the new pressure technology. Until we could barely imagine how it would work, RIM has filed the patent titled: “Pressure password for a touchscreen device”.
If we go by the description of this potential unlocking mechanism, it would allow for pressure-sensitive password of all sorts. The devise is equipped with force sensors that would recognize patterns based on pressure unlock feature where you would have to apply pressure to certain parts of the screen instead of sliding or drawing.
Well, RIM is relying on customer feedback to help them write another success story to unlock the touch phone devices. So, you may share your idea to have it incorporated.
Sounds a bit crazy, but a http://apk2bar.unker.net/ is a website that converts your Android .apk files pretty quick and slick to .bar files. These .bar files can then be run on the PlayBook.
All you have to do is to get an .apk file, upload it to http://apk2bar.unker.net/ , and voila, the website does the rest. Though it takes some time to convert the file, but it is not known if it is due to the server load or the conversion process?

While RIM was very elusive about it’s next gen BB10 platform, it was made almost clear that it would be ditching it’s trademark physical QWERTY keyboard for a full touch device.
The same has been made clear by the new RIM CEO, Thorsten Heins. He quoted
…even on a full touch device, BlackBerry is still about typing and getting things done.
Heins also highlighted the proposed integrated nature of the company’s platform.
We believe that to deliver a compelling offering to you out there, we need to combine fantastic software and hardware with cloud services.
RIM plans to launch BB10 powered devices later this year as there is a delay due to the firm having to wait on critical chipsets becoming available.
While RIM is marketing the BB10 as
..a new, revolutionary mobile computing engine we have built
we fear that the war of ecosystems has gone to a higher level and RIM is a late entry into it. RIM plans to counter this by incentivizing it’s product line. Looking forward to make a strong foothold, RIM seeks to upgrade the current users of the now end-of-life BB7 OS to BB10.

On public demand, RIM has made a number of changes to its BlackBerry Beta Zone website, which enables users to test Blackberry apps before they are available more widely.
The user interface has been tweaked to make it more engaging and quicker for users to find what they want. It also has more interactive elements, according to the Inside BlackBerry blog.
The division between business and consumer technology has been more clearly defined, with separate URLs for BlackBerry Beta Zone and BlackBerry Beta Zone for Business.
A new blog-like newsfeed has been added to provide the latest site news and allow users to take part in conversations. Polls and surveys will also be posted on the site, to provide more opportunities to feedback on apps.
There is also an updated mobile version of the Beta Zone site, with a mobile-friendly layout, simplified download process, and additional features to improve the mobile beta testing experience.
The changes are based on more than 3,000 responses from the Beta Zone community, and more updates are said to be in the pipeline.
Simulators are always a welcome thing when it comes to development. And RIM know the importance of it. It has revealed a simulator for the recently announced BlackBerry 9320.
You can now test your apps on the simulator before making them available for public release.

To ensure your applications are available in BlackBerry App World for this new device launch, we encourage you to test your applications using the new BlackBerry® 9320 simulator and navigate to the BlackBerry App World vendor portal to post your applications for the BlackBerry 9320 running BlackBerry 7.1 OS. You must indicate application support for this new device as current applications will not be automatically posted for sale for this new smartphone. Please follow these instructions:
1. Select Manage Products
2. Select the eye (view) under the Releases column of the app to be changed
3. Select (edit) next to the Release containing the bundle to be edited
4. Select ‘Add Release Version’ tab
5. Select the pen (edit) under the Device Support column for the bundle you wish to edit
Note: Many applications that currently support the BlackBerry® 9220 series should be easily ported to this new device with minimal change required.
You can start using this simulator immediately and RIM claims that it is super easy to use.

RIM marketing has posted up a nice strategy for developers to develop more for the BlackBerry devices. According to RIM
Starting April 10, at 12:01 am, every 100′th app submitted to BlackBerry® App World™ will be eligible for a free prize package to attend BlackBerry 10 Jam. To win the prize package, the app must be approved according to BlackBerry App World Vendor Guidelines. Contest closes on April 26 at midnight EST.
The prize package includes a free pass to BlackBerry 10 Jam on May 1′st to 3′rd, 2012, a travel voucher to purchase a coach airline ticket to Orlando Florida, hotel accommodations while at the conference and $500 USD spending money.
The apps can target either a BlackBerry smartphone or tablet.
You read it correct ladies and gentlemen, every hundredth app will win a ticket to the BlackBerry 10 Jam.
You should get all the apps up and running for submission before time runs out…!!
